Why Do We Support Israel?
Genesis 12:3 is essential in understanding why we support the Jewish people
Perhaps you witnessed the debate between Tucker Carlson and Senator Ted Cruz regarding the nation of Israel! It was something to watch I will tell you that! You can view a clip of it Here.
Today, I want to discuss why we support Israel from the Bible and why it is not always an endorsement of their government or politics!
“According to the Word of the Lord through the prophet Zechariah:
📜”I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples…. [I]n that day…I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.” (Zechariah 12:1-3)
Dave Hunt believes that the reason Jerusalem has remained “the top news story in the world” is because of “the fulfillment of multiple prophecies concerning this remarkable city and its unique place in God’s will,” which he maintains “is absolute proof that God exists, that the Bible is His Word, and that the Jews are His chosen people.” Dave Hunt believes that despite centuries of dispersion and persecution, and the establishment of the church, the Jews remain the elect nation, God having declared: “You only have I chosen of all the families of the earth” (Amos 3:2). As David Baron observes, “They are not only the ‘ancient’ nation, but the ‘everlasting’ nation.”Thus the Jewish people have been uniquely and irrevocably chosen to reveal the character and glory of God to the nations, and “to test and expose the hearts of humanity.” According to the parable of the sheep and the goats, the nations will be judged on the basis of how they treated Jesus’ Jewish brethren (Matthew 25:31-46).
Paul Wilkinson says in his book: Understanding Christian Zionism: “The consistent appeal that Christian Zionists make to Genesis 12:2-3 has been described by one critic as “a monotonous theme.” Although it is somewhat reductionist to claim that “Genesis 12:3 is Christian Zionism in a nutshell,” this text is a central tenet of Christian Zionist theology, God having promised Abraham that He would bless those who blessed him and curse those who cursed him. Christian Zionists take this scripture literally by applying it to the way the Gentile nations have treated the Jewish people, claiming that from Haman to Hitler, “history shows how dangerous it is to hate [God’s] chosen people.” As Arnold Fruchtenbaum poignantly observes, “The Jew ‘has stood at the graveside of all his enemies.’” In 1915, Sydney Watson declared that “no nation can persistently persecute [the Jews] without eventually suffering,” and in 1943 at a luncheon with his “old friend” Chaim Weizmann, Winston Churchill spoke of how “God deals with the nations as they deal with the Jews.” As the Lord himself solemnly declared, “the nation or kingdom that will not serve you [Israel] will perish; it will be utterly ruined” (Isaiah 60:12).”
The debate today, is whether we should support Israel’s government or the Jewish people in general. Got Questions makes a valid point:
“Jews are, biblically speaking, the "chosen people of God" and dearly loved by Him. Another reason for Christians to support the nation of Israel is because of the Abrahamic Covenant. We read of God’s promise in Genesis 12:2-3, "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you" (see also Genesis 27:29; Numbers 24:9).
One of the United States’ most worthwhile accomplishments has been its consistent regard for the plight of the Jewish nation. No nation in the history of the world has a better record of treating individual Jews with respect than does America. The same can be said for our befriending Israel as a nation. America has committed many sins for which we may well deserve judgment, but as a nation, we have been a consistent friend of the Jews and the nation of Israel, as well as a benefactor. In 1948, President Harry Truman helped persuade the United Nations to recognize Israel as a nation. Since then, the United States has contributed billions of dollars in aid to Israel.”
Let’s go deeper into Genesis 12:3 because this is the point of debate for some. “And I will bless those who bless you, And the one who curses you I will curse. And in you all the families of the earth will be blessed." (Genesis 12:3)
God reiterates that "in him all the nations of the earth will be blessed" (Ge 18:18) How could this prophecy be fulfilled? Paul answers writing...
Galatians 3:8-9 The Scripture, foreseeing that God would justify (declare righteous) the Gentiles by faith, preached the Gospel (Good News) beforehand to Abraham, saying, “ALL THE NATIONS WILL BE BLESSED IN YOU (quoting Ge 12:3, Ge 18:18). So then those who are of faith are blessed with Abraham, the believer. ”
Romans 4:11 and he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had while uncircumcised, so that he might be the father of all who believe without being circumcised, that righteousness might be credited to them,
So the blessing of Genesis 12 is obtained by faith, the same faith that resulted in the blessing of Abraham, the believer.
Warren Wiersbe writes: “It must have seemed incredible to Abraham and Sarah that God would bless the whole world through an elderly childless couple, but that is just what He did. From them came the nation of Israel, and from Israel came the Bible and the Savior. God reaffirmed this covenant with Isaac (Gen. 26:4) and Jacob (Ge 28:14) and fulfilled it in Christ (Acts 3:25–26).”
In a 2002 Berean Call Newsletter Dave Hunt states: “This covenant involved (1) the promised land and (2) the promised Messiah. Only in the Messiah could God fulfill His pledge to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob: "in thee [and in thy seed] shall all families [or nations] of the earth be blessed" (Gen:12:3; 22:18; 26:4; 28:14). As for the land, God's promise was clear: "For all the land which thou seest, to thee will I give it, and to thy seed for ever" (Gen:13:15); "...the LORD made a covenant with Abram,...Unto thy seed have I given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river...Euphrates."
Anyone who claims to believe the Bible must acknowledge that there is only one nation and one people—the Jews alone—to whom God ever gave a land and specific, perpetual promises. The Jews are the only people still existing as a nation, though scattered, whose genealogy is preserved in Holy Scripture and who are identifiable in the world today. Were that not the case, there would be no fulfillment to hundreds of God's promises and He would be a liar.
Despite the errors of Replacement theologians, God has not cast away Israel or the promises to Israel. The Church has not replaced Israel! In fact Romans 11 is crystal clear about God’s future promises to Israel:
📜“I say then, has God cast away His people? Certainly not! For I also am an Israelite, of the seed of Abraham, of the tribe of Benjamin. God has not cast away His people whom He foreknew. Or do you not know what the Scripture says of Elijah, how he pleads with God against Israel, saying, “Lord, they have killed Your prophets and torn down Your altars, and I alone am left, and they seek my life”? But what does the divine response say to him? “I have reserved for Myself seven thousand men who have not bowed the knee to Baal.”
For I do not desire, brethren, that you should be ignorant of this mystery, lest you should be wise in your own opinion, that blindness in part has happened to Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in. And so all Israel will be saved, as it is written:
“The Deliverer will come out of Zion,
And He will turn away ungodliness from Jacob;
For this is My covenant with them,
When I take away their sins.” (Romans 11:1-4; 25-27)
Most Jews today do not believe God's promises made to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Nevertheless, there has always been a nucleus through the centuries who did believe His promises—and even recognized and admitted that the dispersion of Jews was God's judgment on their sin. The prophesied burden of Israel and Jerusalem continues to grow heavier until it threatens to crush the whole world under the weight of a global conflict. Tragically, that conflict has already manifested itself globally in the despicable scourge of international terrorism. Here, too, Israel is the scapegoat.
Zechariah prophesied about the trouble Israel would cause the nations: “Behold, I will make Jerusalem a cup of drunkenness to all the surrounding peoples, when they lay siege against Judah and Jerusalem. And it shall happen in that day that I will make Jerusalem a very heavy stone for all peoples; all who would heave it away will surely be cut in pieces, though all nations of the earth are gathered against it.” (Zechariah 12:2-3)
Support for the Jewish people and the nation of Israel does not always mean we support their government or the decisions of their politicians. In fact, we must pray for the peace of Jerusalem because things will get so out of control, Israel will be deceived into confirming a covenant of death with the Antichrist! This results in Jacob’s trouble, a 7 year Tribulation period of the worst holocaust Israel has ever experienced! Listen to Jeremiah 30:3-7:
“For behold, the days are coming,’ says the Lord, ‘that I will bring back from captivity My people Israel and Judah,’ says the Lord. ‘And I will cause them to return to the land that I gave to their fathers, and they shall possess it.’ ”
Now these are the words that the Lord spoke concerning Israel and Judah.
“For thus says the Lord:
‘We have heard a voice of trembling,
Of fear, and not of peace.
Ask now, and see,
Whether a man is ever in labor with child?
So why do I see every man with his hands on his loins
Like a woman in labor,
And all faces turned pale?
Alas! For that day is great,
So that none is like it;
And it is the time of Jacob’s trouble,
But he shall be saved out of it.”
In conclusion, consider this excerpt from Paul Wilkinson’s book: “It is not with Israel and the Jewish people that Christian Zionism is primarily concerned, but with the God of Israel and the Jewish Scriptures. As Walter Riggans explains, “a biblical Zionism is about God before it is about Israel.” Christian Zionists teach that the survival of the Jews and the re-establishment of the Jewish State authenticate the Bible and vindicate God’s plan of salvation. They also assert that by detaching herself from her Jewish roots, the church has been blinded to God’s purposes, and love, for Israel. As Scofield wrote, “It is the Jew’s Bible I hold in my hand, and it is God’s Bible back of that, and it is the Christian’s Bible, because God has sent it to us through the Jew.” In the words of Lewis Sperry Chafer,
The love of God is toward Israel…. So the Spirit-filled believer will learn to rejoice in the great prophecies and purposes of God for that people with whom He is in everlasting covenant, and for whom He has an everlasting love.
Christian Zionism also ensures that the Lord Jesus Christ is seen as “the crown and the shining star of all prophecy,” and “the King of Scripture.”
